Mental Health. It’s likely the most talked about subject in the world today- at least, from a psychological standpoint. The dramatic, rather unprecedented rise in various mental health issues in various individuals has been startling, to say the least. Why is this? What causes it? Is there some sort of bug going around? I assume you have a barrage of questions upon further thought about the subject, but hold your questions for some time. We’re going to understand exactly what is meant by mental health, and whether or not there is some sort of ‘bug’ going around. How can you strengthen your own self to remain resistant to the inevitable issues which will affect you in life. How can you prevent a complete infiltration of your mind?

Mental refers to a LOT of things in our brain. What is meant by mental?? Our autonomic responses? Our ability for cognition? How our cognition relates to our autonomic behavior? It is such a broad term, that we need to first devote a section to defining it

What Seems To Be The Issue
Keep Your Mentals In Check
For a very, very generic description, mental health is the clarity in one’s own thoughts and how those thoughts are utilized to affect action. Now, here’s the thing. This can also encapsulate actual disorders such as PTSD, in which case the solution must be ordered therapy. We are not here to talk about disorders, but rather about issues. A mental health issue is when an individual’s brain displays no serious structural abnormalities or functional deficiencies and they have the full capacity to think, but their psychology and their thoughts severely inhibit their quality of life. Although this next bit won’t sound particularly pleasing, this entirely stems from a patient’s thought process. On a neurological site, one cannot fool anyone by proclaiming themselves to have PTSD, to have actual OCD, to be biologically depressed rather than cognitively depressed. Oftentimes, individuals who think that they simply cannot control something can very well indeed control their behavior. Have angry outbursts? Chances are that your amygdala is not, in fact, the size of two electrons, but that you simply are giving into emotional impulse and acting irrationally. Find yourself stressing over situations to the point where you cannot perform? Chances are that the situation is likely not life or death, but your thoughts and extreme hypotheticals are marinating it. Don’t become alienated just yet- hear out what I’m getting at in the next section.

Looking at it from a deeper lens, the above statements I made are more prudent of an explanation for the current phenomena we observe. How is it that a sudden spike has occurred in mental health issues when we live in the most privileged age of all time, brought together by fast communication?
The Bug
The issue stems precisely from the lack of self-worth we place on ourselves. It has become all too common for influential platforms to promote ‘succumbing’ to our cognitive desires, telling us to relax, take a break, etc. When we wake up from our relaxation, we find ourselves stuck in the same place as before. While it may sound nice for someone to tell us that it’s completely normal to let our thoughts control our behavior and action, and that it is society’s responsibility to accept it, it’s objectively incorrect. It results in a cascade of inaction and laziness; furthermore, we begin blaming others for our problems. However, if self-worth is preached so much, is it not asinine to suggest that it is us ourselves who are incapable of fixing problems bestowed upon our lives? Too much emphasis is placed, currently, on finding excuses for our lack of competence rather than crafting a solution. It reaches to a point where we begin to breach the very natural fabrics of the universe, defying biology and our bodies, in search of an excuse to throw our issues upon. Many social media platforms preach empowerment. It is not empowering to simply let slide all the controllable issues in someone. It is not empowering to let someone bawl uncontrollably at the slightest of issues. It is empowering and advocating of self-respect to stem the confidence in someone that they can control their behaviors. It is empowering to tell them they can improve. They do have the capacity to do so. It is, in fact, rather offensive to insinuate to someone that their circumstances or their choices are the reason they cannot succeed and that they need some magical advantage.

Should negative thoughts not exist? That’s impossible- we think rapidly and impulsively. However, we can MOST DEFINITELY control the thoughts that we choose to strongly lean upon and the ones we utilize to influence our behavior and course of action. Easier said than done though, right?

Timeless Solution
The Gateway
Every problem is the gateway to a solution. That must be the mentality you adapt here, because I won’t sugarcoat it. Because of how impulsive our thoughts can be, it takes immense willpower to control them and act accordingly. But, what are some steps we can take? First of all, affirm to yourself you are human. Affirm to yourself you have the same skillset as everyone on this Earth, and the same potential to develop that skillset. While you may not think it, I promise you, you are. Behave as if you are human. Walk with confidence and demand basic respect. Behave with integrity and treat others with hospitality. Keep your intentions pure whilst differentiating between right and wrong, reality and blasphemy, to develop a sense of self identity. Thought is only one component of the formula, however. Human tendency favors action and results. Put yourself in situations to improve. Tackle problems and questions which have inherently complex answers, so you can view the beauty of your own intelligence. Embrace emotional conflict and don’t be fearful to experience anger or sadness in times of pure stress when you are forced to control them, so you view the beauty of your own capacity and learn to control them in the most basic of times. Identify the areas you could have improved in to alleviate the situation, so you can prepare for the sheer growth you will see once the improvement occurs, rather than blaming the situation itself. Compel yourself to experience the world, to tackle the challenges, and to adopt a supreme faith

The key often lies within us. Force yourself to think positive, even if it is hard. Solve actual problems, think actual thoughts, and push your limits to see how much you are actually capable of growing. It is only through this process that your mental health will start to affirm itself
