Almost every single living thing, reaction, and process requires the manipulation of energy, in the form of energy usage and energy release. Furthermore, whenever energy is indeed utilized, its presence can be tracked using various measures, such as temperature changes, speed changes…or, in the brain, electrical changes. The primary source of neural signaling and the largest indicator of neural activity is the firing and the production of electrical potential differences. Remember, electrical energy is a form of energy and can indeed be utilized to do work, the phenomenon seen in the brain. However, measuring the actual activity is not done by measuring the amplitude of electric potential, but rather by examining the frequency which these electric gradients are present? That’s where waves play a role…not ocean waves, by the way.

The concept of waves emitted by the body or energy sources are always complex. What is the wave made of? How is it even measured? And, can we be sure that the quantities we’re measuring follow wave like behavior? Luckily, the wizards of science have confirmed the answers- we just have to find them!

Ride The Wave
Too Much Of Something
In the last segment of the opening paragraph, I used somewhat of a buzzword- frequency. In this context, what does frequency actually mean? Frequency refers to the raw number of times that a wave will reach its peak in a given unit of time, in this case, seconds. From an overall standpoint, this makes perfect sense; the higher the frequency(Hertz), the more electrical signals are actually being potentiated through time. However, brainwaves can be difficult to understand, because one would think that the peak of the wave would represent an action potential, but I’m going to need you to halt thinking in terms of signaling for this article. In the context of brainwaves, net electrical activity is simply measured, so the raw firing(in harmony) of a population of neurons is what electrical activity actually refers to in this application. While an action potential measures the intensity of a signal and whether a signal was actually powerful enough to generate some sort of propagated response, net electrical activity measures the pure firing of neurons, indicating to what extent our brain is performing. Naturally, however, we are inclined to ask ourselves- what sort of stages of brainwave frequency can/do we find our brains in, from a general standpoint?
Roll Tide
Scientists have classified and associated different frequencies of electrical activity(and thus, different brainwave types) with different levels of actual arousal. The measurement of brainwave frequencies can alert a neurologist or someone in medicine of how conscious a person actually is(and whether they are even conscious). Ordering our waves from lowest to highest, the first type of frequency ranges from 0.5-4 Hertz, and they are called Delta Waves. Obviously, a frequency of 0 Hertz would indicate no activity, and even during sleep, our physiological functions(such as breathing) must be maintained…so some portion of the brain is always active. You probably guessed that this frequency is indicative of deep sleep, so no Rapid Eye Movement, no dreams, and decreased muscle tone(decreased Basal Ganglia Activity). A step up from that is 4-8 Hertz, the Theta Waves, present notably when you’re drowsy OR in no real deep thought but still engaged in visualization and creativity and meditation. Alpha Waves(the zen state), 8-12 Hertz, are present in a calmed state; envision a scene after a relaxing shower when you’re watching Television. Beta Waves have the largest range, from 12-30 Hertz, and are recorded during focus, wakefulness, problem-solving, decision making, and natural interaction. Anything above that is a Gamma Wave, involved in higher-order critical thinking and perception

The variation of wave presence is quite an interesting phenomenon. For example, both Gamma Waves and Alpha Waves may be present when solving a complex Physics Problem. However, the NET most common wave may depend on environment- let me explain this concept further.

Healthy Surroundings
While you perhaps caught onto this potential phenomenon, brainwaves are not strict to every single region of the brain upon measurement from one area. Considering how often we examine the different nuanced areas of the brain, it makes perfect sense that under certain conditions, the net electrical activity of those areas would be completely different. Environment and stress play a rather large role in this scenario. For example, if one was solely invested in their own activity, the waves present would likely be Alpha or Beta. Sure, the autonomic nervous system would obviously do its thing, the frontal lobe would likely be working at high speed, and, of course, the sensory components of the nervous system. However, if the stress is low, than there would be relatively little emotional electrical activity, which influences autonomic activity. If you want perspective on how the environment has such an effect on your net electrical activity, visualize yourself airballing a 3 point shot in front of 100,000 people in the NBA Finals. Think of the processing involved to consolidate and effectively ‘move on.’ Of course, as we’ve reiterated various times, these thoughts and processes can be controlled. And, stringing the dots together, a better control on one’s environmental and situational processing compiled with free-flowing thought leads to a net activity of Alpha-Beta Waves…which is exactly what AlphaBrain is designed for.

Particularly fascinating is the fact that Alpha Waves are most likely to be observed in less coinciding with Beta Waves during periods of eye closure/lack of focus. Imagine pairing this calmness with the ability to think clearly. Normally, this calmness is in conjunction with low stimulus…but what if our task-based stimulus was high?
AlphaBrain
Utilizing the basic principles of what we discussed in the last section, the fact that Alpha Waves can safely be concluded to signal a state of rather calmed alertness, Onnit AlphaBrain is a substance which has been garnering rapid interest across markets. AlphaBrain takes the regulatory approach to matters, producing dopamine, but most importantly serotonin, inside of the brain. It accomplishes this via a mixture of “clinically proven amino acids and plant compounds”(Forbes) to stimulate the production. Because serotonin is so involved in mood regulation, its production naturally facilitates calmed states and increased rationality, favoring the production of Alpha Waves. Focus and ability to cognitively approach a task are both increased, as a result. It is affordable, too! A 30 count bottle merely costs 35 dollars. That’s 1 dollar per day for waking hours full of clarity, focus, and peace! It’s worth the investment to assist you in achieving a solid mental framework when, perhaps, you naturally cannot due to age or other disorders. Invest in the product today, and watch in amazement as the world becomes sharper, and you can start behaving like an Alpha!

Wrapping It Up!

Remember- supplements are NOT bad! They assist the body in reaching a necessary threshold of vitamins and nutrients. DRUGS, which artificially enhance processes that are meant to be naturally regulated, are the ones to watch out for. Consult with your doctor, believe in yourself and the tool, and enjoy life to the fullest!
