Before understanding how Virtual Reality can assist us, we have to comprehend its actual mechanism. Simply put, Virtual Reality is quite literally reality inside of a pair of goggles which can be manipulated. It can be useful for video games, simulations, and more. Before any software is developed, the concept has to be developed. Using 3D modeling, the sceneries, character development, backgrounds, special effects, and graphics are relatively set. When you’re playing a video game on the television, your surroundings are still Earthly. There’s your television, your couch, etc. When you look at something through a telescope, it’s merely a magnified version of what you already knew existed. In Virtual Reality, your surroundings are not your own. You are playing First Person inside a manufactured world. Virtual Reality can actually impact some of your sensory systems, however. One of the key features of the brain is proprioception, which is a fancy term for your body’s ability to localize its position relative to its surroundings. The fluid in the vestibular system stimulates cells which detect position. It’s why nausea occurs when spinning around- even if you’re still, the fluid in the vestibular system may not be, affecting balance. While utilizing Virtual Reality, you may be relatively stationary, but there is a perception that you are actually moving and taking steps. The fluid in the vestibular system versus your occipital perception are out of sync, which can cause some sickness. However, your ability to function is still maintained. While the experience is exhilarating at first, once time has been spent within the simulator, you get used to it. Our cognitive functionality is still maintained, which is why it’s an excellent simulator- there’s no actual danger, but all of the chaos can still be replicated. This being known, how can we use it to actually strengthen and condition our minds?

VR is not one of the only ways to expedite the learning process…it will soon become the primary way(outside of actual reality).
