“Is my kid smart enough to succeed?” “Will my child develop into an intelligent person?” “Does he have what it takes?” Intelligence and its measure is a common worry in any new parent, because they have no clue how the little shape of magic that is their child’s brain will actually develop into an efficient path of circuitry. There is a common misconception that one is simply born with a preset intelligence, which manifests a dangerous thought process in the child that they are not capable of much. However, as we have observed time and time again, the golden rule of the body is that it does everything for survival, and that includes our intelligence, which may seem surprising to some. It’s time to clear up the confusion, as well as examine a tool which, in fact, CAN boost intelligence

It may seem somewhat strange…how can a DIY brain kit improve a child’s intelligence? I thought books and papers only did that! Well, as you may come to find, intelligence is portrayed in quite an inaccurate manner these days, and stick around for some probable surprises!

True Smarts
Understandable
Intelligence is defined as the ability to adapt one’s behavior to the situation around them, be it problem solving, emotionally, spatially, etc. The reason why it can be so difficult to understand is due to the broad range of what intelligence encapsulates. I thought the amygdala processed emotion…and the cerebellum fine-tuned motor pathways…how does all of that factor into intelligence? While those areas ensure we process those aspects of life, intelligence involves adaptation, which involves planning, critical thinking, and experience-based knowledge. Those aspects are nearly all controlled by the frontal lobe/prefrontal cortex, indicating that that is the area for intelligence. Upon arrival of a stimulus and sensory/emotional interpretation of a situation, cognitive processing than ensues. In this cognitive processing is simply a multitude of possible scenarios playing out in one’s head, how to effectively react to the present situation, how to manipulate it to one’s advantage in the best possible manner. What may be difficult to wrap your head around is that it’s not a situation specific pattern of connections. There is no intelligence network in the brain which literally holds the code for every specific scenario. The networks are not situation based, they are experience based, and their response to each situation increases in efficiency with experience. How?

If the networks are situation based, then why do they keep on improving with experience? Wouldn’t that directly make them experience based? How is it that many of the structures in the brain are so nuanced, but the area involved in the most specific of tasks can be so general?
Double Edged Sword
Have you ever noticed a person who is particularly smart…not skilled, which is aptitude in a specific niche of life, but smart, which is meticulous ability to observe and adapt…and have recognized that they are not smart in one aspect of life, but in any. Be it an unfamiliar situation, or an activity which has become second nature, they can use reasoning and efficiency to portray a solid performance. This is because of the nature of neural connections, which we will delve into here. Activities which involve complex planning and abstract thinking will increase aptitude in all aspects of life, not simply that specific aspect. The ability to reason and create is not restricted to the task at hand, because that is the function of the prefrontal network. The function of the cortex is not to solve physics problems, or calculate a golf swing while factoring wind in, or determine how to best structure a workout…it is to THINK to do ALL of those things. When we think in one aspect of life, synaptic efficacy and magnitude improves(The BioChemistry Behind It), increasing general ability. The skillset of thinking, combined with prior knowledge of the subject, makes for an unstoppable machine a logic. What I’m trying to say here- if you’re thinking of improving intelligence– all you literally have to do is THINK. Challenge yourself to reason, to speculate, to determine, and to conclude, and most importantly, to question and search for answers, and understand why those answers hold true!

Imagine the labs in chemistry class. Before each lab, the teacher would have a procedure laid out…you just had to perform the lab. However, imagine you had to create that procedure. There would be quite a hold up, because that involves thinking and analytical reasoning. It’s challenging!

Quote-Based Evidence
Part of the reason that we think that intelligence is so in-built is because of the IQ test. Remember, just like any other test, personal motivation, sleep, energy, and a number of other factors can actually affect performance on the test, so one score may not reflect intelligence. Furthermore, we have been inclined to think that intelligence is in-built due to the evidence that there is a genetic component. Yes, while the genetic component of it may determine how much work it takes for one to actually increase their intelligence, and how much potential one has for synaptic adaptation, it’s important to realize that most people never even reach this potential. Due to the emphasis on grades, results, and answers, we don’t encourage kids to think! Study to a test, make sure you don’t mess up, it’s all about memorization. No wonder kids with poor results think they have low intelligence. They are never prompted to think and are judged based on results. Genetically, it may indeed be difficult for these kids to display and manifest intelligence, but they likely have an abundant amount of untapped potential. Everyone has magic inside of them…saying the correct spell is important.

Intelligence certainly is determined, to some extent , by genetics. However, these genetics more so determine the rate at which one can learn can adapt, and not necessarily the capacity to adapt. Be more encouraging and confident of/in your abilities!
